10 Useful “Google Translator” Features that Everyone Should Know

Google Translator, which millions of people around the world use every day, hides very interesting features. This is offline mode, and handwriting, and even translation of text from photos! Such opportunities will save you a great time, and in some cases just necessary. This article will help you to understand the interesting features of Google Translator.

Ink

Google Translator doesn’t just support a simple set of words with a keyboard, but also handwriting. And this applies to both the web version of the service and the mobile application. In the first case, just click on the pencil icon at the bottom of the input window. You won’t need a touchscreen or stylus support.

You can write in the open window with a mouse, pressing its left button. Below the typing area will appear words that the service was able to recognize.

In the mobile application, handwriting is much more convenient. It is activated by clicking on the icon of the pen, after which you will be able to draw both individual letters and whole words with your finger. This method of input can be especially useful for hieroglyphic language learners: i.e. Japanese, Chinese, or Korean.

Translation offline

The mobile “Google Translator” has long been able to work without a connection to the web. You just need to pre-load the dictionaries of the languages you want. You can do this from the side menu of the app by selecting Offline Translation.

In this section, language packages can not only be stored but also removed from your smartphone’s memory.

Synchronized translation

Google Translator has a voiceover and even voice input, but a much more useful feature is “Communication.” It allows you to go into a special mode with a simultaneous translation for a dialogue with a foreigner.

In this mode, the app listens and translates all the phrases into the language of the interlocutor, saying them in voice and displaying them with text. To invite someone to chat through the Communication feature, you need to choose a language and click on the palm icon in the top right corner. A special welcome message in your chosen language will then appear on the screen.

We also note that for the mode of simultaneous translation and voice input in general, you can activate the censorship function. It will hide behind the asterisks (z) all the profanity that it recognizes. You can find this feature in the app’s settings, in the Voice input section.

Instant translation via camera

An equally useful feature of the mobile app is to translate text using a smartphone camera. In real-time, the finished text will be displayed instead of the label you’re shooting. Instant translation will be useful when you need to know what a sign or warning sign means. Especially it will be convenient abroad

To get to this feature, you only need to run the camera from the app’s toolbar. In the mode of shooting, you can open and any previously received photo, where there is something to translate.

Own dictionary

Translations of any words or phrases can be stored in your dictionary so that later you can return to them. All you have to do is click on the asterisk. In the mobile “Translator” it is displayed directly opposite the translation, and in the web version of the service – under it.

Go to the list of saved translations on the smartphone will be possible through the main menu by clicking on “The Conversation.” On the desktop, the path to this section is through the star button above the translation area.

Translation from any app

On Android smartphones, “Google Translator” offers a convenient function of quick translation from any application where you can highlight the text. By noting the right word or phrase, you need to deploy the context menu by clicking on three points and select Translation.

A mini-translator window will be opened on top of the original application, where you can change your language or listen to the pronunciation if necessary. This feature is included in the app’s settings, in the section with the logical title “Fast Translation.”

Text message

You don’t have to use copy-insert to translate the text of the text that came in. You can go straight from Google Translator’s mobile message. Simply click on “Translation SMS” in the main menu and select a message.

Translation in the search bar

If you want to know the translation of one or more words, you can do with a simple request in the search bar. In the case of the English translation, it should have the form of your word or phrase ” in English.” An example in the screenshot below.

The search bar translation feature is relevant for both smartphones and PCs.

Translation sites

There are three different ways to translate text from a foreign site to a PC. The most obvious is the banal copying and insertion into the translator. In the case of small snippets of text, this may be convenient, but if you want to translate the whole page, it’s best to use other methods.

For example, you can simply copy a link to a site page and insert it into Google Translator. In the window on the right will appear a link to the same site, but already in the right language and with the preservation of all markup.

Another way involves having a Chrome browser. In it, when you visit a foreign resource in the address bar on the right will appear the icon “Google Translator.” Clicking on it will also allow you to translate the entire site.

Translation

This is another feature that is only relevant to the web version of the service. It allows you to download a text document from your computer’s memory and see its translation. It could be a PDF file format or, for example, DOCX.

To download the document, you need to completely clear the typing area and click underneath it on the “Translate document” link. Once you’ve selected the file, you’ll only have to press the translation button. The text will open in the same window. The quality of such translation sometimes leaves much to be desired, but with simple documents, the function can be useful.
